Initially, converting your garage into a bedroom may seem like a simple and painless solution to whatever problem you may be having. There is usually plenty of room and you may never use your garage for much of anything. But there are certain things to keep in mind when converting your garage concerning both safety and comfort.
Constructing a room from scratch will cost you more since you’ll have to build up the base and enclosing walls around. While creating a garage bedroom will cost much less because the room itself is already there. It’s got walls, electricity, and other things you don’t really thing about when constructing a new room from scratch.
Where there are solid pros for creating a garage bedroom, the bad news is for the car. It will suffer as it will have to give up the indoor, weather protected parking space. Remember, parking outside may cost you more than just frequent car washes. So really it just depends on how much you care about your car being kept outside.
Design And Space Planning
The design of the space is usually pretty straightforward with just a few things to watch out for. The flooring is usually not ideal for a bedroom. That can be solved fairly cheaply with big rugs and other floor prep. The only other thing to watch out for is water. You probably don’t have water coming in to your garage, so it probably cannot have a bathroom. This usually isn’t a huge deal, but it’s something to keep in mind when you have this idea.
This part is more personal preference. If you don’t have a garage door with windows you may consider getting one. Windows allow for natural light, which can really help a room to feel more homey and less desolate. You can also get nice looking windows, like with frosted glass or something, to give the room a better look and feel.
Since most of the garages aren’t built up on strong standards, good insulation is needed to convert it into a place worth living in. Especially in extreme weather conditions, insulation and damp proofing the walls as and the floors is fundamental prep work. Make sure to bar the main entrance of the garage properly. Only then your garage will become a cozy room.
Plumbing and Wiring
For obvious reasons, you’ll want to get help for the plumbing if you are adding a shower in the bedroom. You may have to get new wiring done since previously the garage would have sufficiently been operated on a single light. An electrical upgrade might be required to meet the needs of the new load.
Provision Of Heating And Cooling
You may introduce heating and cooling systems either by tying up from the main system of the house or by providing a mini independent system. For example, installation of a reversible split can also do the job for a room.
Priming and Painting
Paint the walls of your desired color. You may put on decorative wallpaper alternatively to do the job.
Now that your garage bedroom is ready you may pull in the furniture and make it feel cozy with the perfect accent pieces, woven rugs, photo frames on the walls, and colorful bean bags.
